CDAL Research Group was founded in 1999 by a group of motivated professors of Material Science of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). Since then, CDAL has had an intense collaboration agenda with industrial companies and leading Research Centres from all over the world, participating in multiple R&D projects, and showing an intense publishing rate in edge research subjects.

CDAL vision is to be a reference in the research of light alloys and surface engineering engineering techniques. Its mission focused on carrying out a high level research oriented towards light metal alloys, their associated metallurgical techniques and their role in the sustainable development or our society. A key part being the transfer of knowledge to the industrial sector.

Noted project

Project BASE 3D

The emerging group BASE3Dis coordinated by CIM foundation from UPC, it is a group of research centres born to promote the investigation, technological development and innovation in the 3D printing area. BASE 3D is formed by 4 sub-projects, dedicated to leading aspects of 3D printing

LIGHT3D: Laser technologies

FUSE3D: Material deposition technologies

INK3D: Continue ink deposition technologies

HYBRI3D: Multi-material hybridisation technologies

El CDAL is participating in FUSE3D sub-project.

FUSE3D 3D project investigates new techniques to deposit the 3D printing material in molten or semisolid state. The focus can be in metals, plastics or compound materials. CDAL contributes in this project with its knowledge of aluminium alloys, developing appropriate microstructures to be used in additive manufacturing using 3D printing techniques.

BASE 3D: This project is financed jointly by the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)

Global inversion BASE3D project: 3,7 M€

Research and innovation network

CDAL participates in the new Additive Manufacturing Reference Network (XaRFA), formed by 26 groups from 14 institutions in Catalonia and led by the CIM UPC Foundation.

XaRFA aims to improve the transfer, valorization and internationalization of research around additive manufacturing developed by the Catalan research and innovation fabric.
